BOWLS
WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
(Leamington Spa, England)
Marlene Castle scored two playoff wins yesterday to finish 17th in the singles section.
After finishing a disappointing fifth in her qualifying pool, Castle fought back with victories over Norfolk Island and Zambia.
Castle's finish secured 13 points towards New Zealand's bid to win the overall team award, the Taylor Trophy.
Castle had to come from behind in both her matches.
She beat Norfolk Island's Anne Pledger 21-19 to move into the playoff for 17th place against Zambia's Hilda Luipa.
Down 6-0 after two ends, Castle fought back to lead 8-7 after eight.
Both players then traded shots until Castle pulled away to win 21-18.
The focus now turns to the fours where New Zealand will be looking to win a second world title after Jo Edwards and Sharon Sims took the pairs gold medal last week.
New Zealand are the defending champions and the four of Jo Edwards, Sharon Sims, Val Smith and Wendy Jensen take on Jersey, undefeated after six group matches, in the quarter-finals today.

A 152-run partnership between Andrew Puttick and Ashwell Prince, followed by a 66-run stand between Prince and Neil McKenzie, put the hosts in a strong position, on 260 for four, before a mini-collapse saw them slump to 292 for six when bad light stopped play.
South Africa A made the most of good batting conditions in the first two sessions and passed the visitors' total of 226 by tea.
