PERTH - Adam Clarke, a New Zealand provincial halfback with a South Australian grandfather, has joined the Western Force on a one year contract, the Super 14 rugby franchise announced today.
Having trialled with the New Zealand under-21s in 2005, and the Highlanders earlier this year, Clark willcross the Tasman to link up with the Perth-based Force and have his first training session today.
Clarke made his provincial debut for Southland against the British Lions in 2005 and represented that team in the national championship competition 16 times.
He has also represented South Island Maoris over the past four years.
Clarke said he was a little shocked when he got the call from Force coach John Mitchell, the former All Blacks mentor.
"When I got the phone call I was a wee bit taken away. I couldn't believe it," Clarke said.
"It will be the best move for my rugby career and I am looking forward to taking it as far as I can."
Mitchell said Clarke was the physical type of halfback the Force needed after the departure of Chris O'Young.
"Adam fits that profile. He's been biding his time in the shadow of (Southland's All Black halfback) Jimmy Cowan and now he's got his chance," Mitchell said.
