Cambridge trainer Murray Baker is expecting a bold run from his promising middle-distance performer Viz Vitae in the main race at the Opunake Racing Club's meeting at New Plymouth today.
Viz Vitae will be having his third run back from a six-month layoff when lining up in the progressive grade
Merial (1800m).
The second of Viz Vitae's two career wins came in his third run back from a previous let up.
The Shinko King four-year-old went the race of an improver last start when fifth over the distance of today's race at New Plymouth on November 15 when the running rail was 6 metres wider than normal.
"He was a bit slow to get into the clear last start because of the running rail out where it was," Baker said. "In the circumstances it was a nice run and that race improved him further so I'm expecting a good run from him tomorrow."
Baker said while 1800m was a little short of Viz Vitae's best, at this point of his campaign it should not make too much difference.
A wet track would be of concern though and showers are forecast for today. "He needs it firm," Baker said.
Viz Vitae will be ridden by in-form apprentice Vanessa Johnston, who claims 2kg.
