Able One and Australians John Moore and Darren Beadman denied New Zealand's Paul O'Sullivan victory in last night's HK$12 million ($2.15 million) Champions Mile in Hong Kong.
The O'Sullivan runner Fellowship, by O'Reilly, started favourite and tried hard in the closing stages but couldn't quite match it with Able One, who won the rich metric mile three years ago.
"He deserved that, he's has all sorts of physical problems in the last three years," said John Moore. There was well-placed substantial late backing for Able One.
Paul O'Sullivan had been confident of New Zealand-bred Fellowship going close based on his recent form. "If he's going to win an international group one event this should be it."
Another former New Zealander, Thumbs Up, got back to last in early running and couldn't make up the necessary ground in the home straight.
John Moore completed a remarkable double when Viva Pataca won the HK$15,000,000 Audemars Piguete Cup over 2000m.
Viva Pataca also won the same race three years ago. He is now an 8-year-old and had not won a race this season.
The 1.50 favourite Collection raced keenly in second-last to the home turn and, although he ran on strongly, he never looked a chance.
