Ron Baker was surprised on only one level that Something Majic caused an upset in winning at Ellerslie last start.
"I knew she was well enough to win, but I didn't think she would handle the sticky track."
Tomorrow's $30,000 Evans Metric Mile at Pukekohe gives Something Majic an ideal opportunity to
provide Baker with his wish list - black type for her looming broodmare career.
Baker expects the Pukekohe surface, heavy yesterday, to suit the mare better than the Ellerslie conditions last start.
"Pukekohe doesn't seem to get as sticky as Ellerslie. The drains work so well at Ellerslie that the water gets away quickly and the footing gets puggy."
Baker will back Something Majic up in the Matamata Cup in two weeks for another black type attempt.
Because the field is significantly better this time Something Majic comes in at only half a kilo more than she carried at Ellerslie and does not look badly placed on 54.5kg.
Another local runner Power Fillee could be about to strike form again. She is a talented mudder who has been hampered by sticky conditions through late winter.Mike Dillon
