The future of greyhound racing is under question following a grim report on dog welfare.
Former High Court judge Rodney Hansen found that racing greyhounds were being routinely euthanased and many have died while racing or were put down following severe injuries.
The Minister of Racing Winston Peters has describedthe findings as disturbing and disappointing, and some practices as "unacceptable". Of the nearly 8900 dogs monitored, only 1123 reached the age of five. There were also 1200 unaccounted for dogs.
