Olympics: China under fire for Beijing Games bid

The European Parliament yesterday joined the chorus of voices protesting against Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

MPs said it would be inappropriate to stage the greatest sports event on Earth in the Chinese capital because China "openly violates human, civil and political rights."

The International Olympic Committee will vote next Saturday on who will host the Games.
