Golf: Fox shines as NZ climb into second

New Zealand, led by Ryan Fox, have climbed to second place in the Nomura Cup Asia-Oceania teams championship in Fiji after a good fightback resulted in the lowest team score of round three at the Natadola Golf Club in Fiji.

They managed a one-over par total and are now four over for the tournament, 13 shots back from leaders Australia who came back to the field in round three with a four-over total.

New Zealand are now two shots ahead of India (+6) with Korea 11 shots back from the Kiwis.

New Zealand number one Fox had a one under 71 in round three to get the Kiwis back in contention.

At two-under par (70, 73 and 71) Fox is also in contention for the individual honours being only three shots back from Cameron Smith (-5).

New Zealand Amateur champion Mathew Perry also fronted on day three with a one-under par 71 and Sam An had a three-over 75 for the third counting score for a one over total.

"The day belonged to Mat and Ryan," New Zealand Golf talent and coach development manager Gregg Thorpe said.

"They both played superbly and were the pick of the field today."

The Nomura Cup returns to the Denarau Golf Club today for the final round and the Kiwis want to keep their momentum going.

"We had a solid come back from day two, while they didn't make huge inroads into the Aussies' lead, they did nibble away at it a bit and showed the field what they are capable of," said Thorpe.
