Thieves could not resist the display of V8 supercar driver Greg Murphy's go-kart in the window of a Hastings book store.
Staff at Foster Brook Paper Plus were this morning cleaning up broken glass after a brick was thrown through their front window in an overnight attempt to steal the kart.
The kart was lent to the shop a fortnight ago by Rod Murray, a friend of Murphy, who hails from Hawke's Bay. The kart was being used in a display promoting Murphy's new book, Murph's Law.
Shop owner Byron Brook said an attempt was made to remove the kart, but it appeared those responsible had given up after the kart proved to be too large to manoeuvre out the shop window.
Brook was stunned as to why someone would try to take the kart.
"The kart's of no value. It's Greg's personal thing. It'd be seen straight away if it was raced."
Police are making inquiries into the attempted theft.
In the meantime, Brook plans to take the undamaged kart back to Murray tonight.
