Takapuna, led by two goals from international striker Dave Kosoof, took maximum points from their 4-1 win over North Shore United to retain their one-point lead after four rounds.
Hibiscus Coast Dairy Flat also took maximum points (including a bonus for four or more goals) in their 8-0 win over bottom-placed Indians to set up a classic end-of-round clash with Takapuna on Saturday.
With their defensive trio of Brent Edwards, Jayesh Kalidas and Aiden Hill providing the platform, Takapuna were in control after a slow start. Scott Heappy and Scott Edwards added the other goals.
Tony Waldron and Nathanial Joy scored two each for the Coasters. The rout was started by early goals from Steve Waldron and Dean Child, while Blair Hopping and Colin Nichol also scored against the hapless Indians.
Star-studded East Coast Bays made hard work of beating ABC 3-2.
Brad Montgomerie scored twice with deflections for the winners, while Kevin McPheat hit home from a penalty corner to break the 2-2 deadlock.
Jaimee Provan, back from the test series with Canada, scored four for East Coast Bays in their 9-0 romp over North Shore United in their premier women's match.
Kendyl Cherry (2), Kimberly Green, Alana Forster and Leisen Jobe also scored in a game in which New Zealand utility Lizzy Igasan showed out.
Leaders HCDF led Takapuna 1-0 at halftime through Bronwyn Rees. But a tactical change in the second spell paved the way for a comfortable win with goals from penalty corners to Charleen Antony and Selina Scampton stretching the lead to 3-0 before Bridget Dey grabbed a late goal for the bonus point.
ABC needed a strong second half to get home 4-2 over Mahurangi.
AUCKLAND
Howick Pakuranga, led by two goals from former international defender Brett Leaver, swamped Slam 8-1 in a one-sided premier men's match on Saturday.
Three of the eight goals were scored from penalty corners in a game Howick Pakuranga led 4-1 at halftime.
It was almost as one-sided in other matches, with Somerville beating Indians 7-1 and University getting home 6-1 over Southern.
Robbie Towns scored a hat-trick for Somerville, Chris Knight (2), Ryan Archibald and Jordan Clark adding the others, while Jude Menzies scored a field goal for Indians.
In the closest match of the round, Roskill Eden, with a solid game from New Zealand goalkeeper Paul Woolford, got home 2-1 over Western.
Mike Van Beekhuizen gave Western the lead with an 11th-minute stroke. Keiran Daji equalised a minute later.
Western dominated the second spell but Beau Collins took the one chance Roskill Eden created and grabbed the winner.
