Palmerston North golfer Craig Perks was one shot off the lead in The Players Championship with nine holes remaining in his final round in Florida this morning.
Playing in the final pairing after being second to American Carl Paulson overnight, Perks led by two shots before bogeying the eighth and ninth holes. He dropped two shots over the first nine holes today to fall to six-under.
That left him one stroke behind Canadian Stephen Ames, who was a scorching six-under the card through 16 holes to have him seven-under.
It set up an exciting finish to the US$1 million (NZ2.31 million) tournament, with six players within two shots of the lead.
Perks was level with Paulson and American Billy Andrade, while Canadian Mike Weir was a shot further back alongside Americans Scott Hoch and Jeff Sluman.
New Zealand's Michael Campbell was tied for 11th on three-under with four holes to play. He was one-under the card today.
