SWIMMING

NZ MASTERS GAMES
(Dunedin)

Auckland swimmers found themselves right amongst the records and the medals this week.

Former Olympic swimmer Mark Weldon from the Roskill Club, competing in his first meet for several years, took nearly 1.5s off the men's 35-39 short course 100m individual medley record time of 1m 01.6s, to win gold.

Fellow Aucklander, Ian Gunthorp from the North Shore Club, also chimed in with a new record in the men's 60-64 age group 100m freestyle with a new mark of 1m 06.36s, beating the three year-old record of club mate Barry Young, which stood at 1m 06.91s.

In what proved to be a closely contested age group, Gunthorp also added gold medals in the 50m freestyle and the 50m backstroke, as well as two silvers in the 50m butterfly and the 100m individual medley.

Meanwhile, Manukau septuagenarian May Hill claimed a gold in the 70-74 age group 200m freestyle but had to settle for silver in the 100m backstroke.

Eight New Zealand short course records were broken, with Invercargill swimmer Wayne Evans, from the Fouveaux club, picking up two records in the men's 40-44 age group - winning the 50 metres butterfly in 28.52s to beat the old mark of 28.98s.

Evans also set a new 100m breaststroke with a time of 1m 11.80s, beating the previous record by nearly two seconds.

The games have attracted close to 7500 competitors.
