Olympic 10,000m champion Haile Gebrselassie has earned US$1 million ($2 million) for running a world-best 10km on the road.
Organisers said Gebrselassie had won the money after clocking 27m 02s on a two-lap course yesterday. The previous best, of 27m 04s, was set on a point-to-point course by Kenyan Joseph Kimani in 1996.
The race was one of the highlights of a four-day festival staged by the Qatar Olympic Committee to highlight the country's successful bid for the 2006 Asian Games.
