High kicks, press-ups and splits were among the antics on show at the 2001 Aerobic Challenge in Auckland yesterday.
More than 60 competitors from throughout the North Island turned out to strut their stuff at Selwyn Theatre in Kohimarama.
The challenge was a national event but was not the
national aerobic championships, which will take place next year.
Participants ranged from 8 years old to over 35, competing as individuals, in pairs, trios and teams. Categories ranged from several junior divisions through to open and senior international grades.
Present national champion Angela McMillan competed in the senior women's division alongside Nicki Treanor, Kelly Stuart and Kylie O'Loughlin.
Soreth Un was the only contender in the senior men's competition.
For the first time the competition was run by New Zealand Gymnastics, which has under its umbrella five gym sports codes - artistic, rhythmic, general gymnastics, sport aerobics and trampolining.
Event director Sarah Bradford said the competitors exhibited a "high standard of routines".
The challenge was part of the trials for the New Zealand teams to compete in the World Cup in Tokyo next April and the world championships in Lithuania in July.
