"We knew last year we had it delayed, but we knew it was going to catch up with us," she said.
Any transport price rise threatened the lifestyle of many Wairarapa people.
"We have so many commuters here, and being so close to Wellington is part of what makes Wairarapa such a good place to live," Ms Paterson said.
"If [the prices] get too high then people may decide that they will pack up and move somewhere else."
Ten-trip ticket prices are also on the rise, with the new Masterton 10-trip price at $136.40, Carterton $128, Greytown $116 and Featherston $108.
All single-trip prices to Wellington will rise by 50 cents.
Greater Wellington councillor Peter Glensor said the increase meant rates could be kept down.
He said about two-thirds of all public transport trips were made with multi-trip tickets or Snapper cards.
"Last year, the fares for single cash trips and trips for more than 11 zones increased," Mr Glensor said. "Fares also increased to reflect the new GST rate. This year we're increasing multi-trip fares."
He said the minimum fare on the Wairarapa train for journeys from Upper Hutt, Waterloo and Petone to Wellington had been removed permanently.
The rise starts on November 1.
