Several digital windows with a view on Wairarapa history have now opened across New Zealand and the world.
Wairarapa archivist Gareth Winter said at a celebration ceremony at the Masterton facility on Monday Wairarapa is the first small regional archive to join the online Matapihi project run by the National Library
that features a selection of pictures, sounds and objects from an array of major New Zealand archives, galleries, libraries and museums.
Wairarapa Archive material is also now available through DigitalNZ, another online information resource from the National Library, the Archives New Zealand Community Archive and the digital image site flickr.com.
Matapihi administrator Micaela Draper said at the celebration function the Wairarapa Archive is a valuable and "unique small town" resource that joins about 20 other much larger contributors, including the National Library and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Mr Winter was a member of the steering committee for the new Archives New Zealand Community Archive that went live this month and which is free to use with contributors able to upload at their own discretion and convenience.
