Waimate assault suspect still on the run

An armed and dangerous South Canterbury man was still on the loose today after evading police at the weekend.

The armed offenders' squad swooped on Waimate on Saturday night in search of Justin Leigh Harney.

Police believed he was carrying a high-powered rifle, and were warning residents to secure their properties and vehicles.

Police are seeking Harney in relation to an alleged assault earlier in the day on his former partner, who had sought sanctuary in the town.

Waimate police said today there had been no sightings of Harney.

He should not be approached because of fears he was carrying a weapon.

Police believed he had left the area.
