Two trapped in South Waikato crash

State Highway 1 has been closed in South Waikato after a three-car crash.

The crash happened near Karapiro, about 1km west of the SH29 turn-off to Tauranga, about 2.15pm.

Emergency service were on the scene by 2.45pm, a police spokeswoman said.

"Someone reported at least two cars had crashed, potentially three, and they were blocking the road and traffic," she said.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said two people were trapped and cutting gear was being used to get them out.

By 3.30pm they had freed one person, and were in the process of freeing the other.

Injuries have been reported but none were life threatening.

"Emergency services are working to clear the road as quickly as possible to allow one lane of traffic access," police said.

"There are no diversions in place and motorists are asked to drive with patience."
