Train victim, 85, named

A man killed after stepping in front of a train in Mt Maunganui on Sunday has been named as 85-year-old John Litchfield.

Police said wind and traffic noise may have prevented Mr Litchfield from hearing the train as he stepped on to the track near the intersection of Maunganui Rd and Concord Ave.

Mr Litchfield, who was known to regularly take the same route from his nearby home towards Omanu Golf Club, was a long-standing member and regular player at the club.
