Teenager dies after vehicle hits tree in Porirua

A teenager died after the vehicle she was driving hit a tree north of Wellington early today, police said.

The Fire Service cut the 18-year-old woman free from the vehicle, which crashed on Whitford Brown Ave, in Porirua, about 12.45am.

The Westpac Trust helicopter flew her to Wellington Hospital, where she died from her injuries, Sergeant Matt Emery of Porirua police said in a statement.

Five other people in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Police were today examining the scene to find the cause of the accident.
