First in, first served will be very much the theme for a charity golf tournament to be staged by the Wairarapa Sports Education Trust (WSET) at the Lansdowne course in Masterton on Friday, July 6.
Entry will be limited to just 120 players and organisers are confident of strong supportfor an event which will continue the already hugely impressive efforts by the trust to enhance the growth of sport in the region.
Costing $25 a player or $100 for a team of four, the tourney will feature a big prize list with the fun element being highlighted by the novelty of not only having the usual longest drive and nearest to the pin prizes but also prizes for shortest drive and farthest from the pin.
Food and beverages will be available throughout the day and any business or individual wanting to sponsor a hole will have the opportunity to do so for $100.
WSET committee member Margie Holmes said the middle Friday of the school holidays was chosen for the tourney because it was a "great time to relax and let off steam".
During the past eight years, WSET has been pro-active in helping build the profile of Wairarapa sport. The trust has raised $60,000 for the High Performance Centre at Rathkeale and has given $70,000 in grants to talented individuals; the most recent being a $3000 grant to junior hockey international Megan Hull through a scholarship awarded at the Wairarapa Times-Age sports awards.
Entries for the July 6 tourney and hole sponsorship can be organised through Margie Holmes (phone (027) 473-3182 or 378-2221).
