A science teacher from Mangakino Area School suffered burns to his hands after a science experiment went wrong yesterday.
The teacher was working in the school's science lab when a mixture of chemicals including magnesium exploded at about 2.40pm.
The man was treated at the school by a doctor and was sent home, Mangakino police said.
Both the Mangakino ambulance and fire services attended.
Occupational Safety and Health were to investigate the incident.
The incident was the second school science lab mishap in the central North Island in as many days. On Wednesday, three Rotorua Girls' High School pupils and a teacher were taken to hospital after inhaling fumes from iodine crystals.
