Eight-year-old Taylor Bourne looked slightly confused today as he held his father's rally helmet and led the coffin into a packed hall in Pukekohe, south of Auckland.
Taylor and his family were farewelling rally legend Possum Bourne, 47, in a packed hall in his hometown of Pukekohe.
As the blue and yellow
coffin, the colours of Bourne's sponsor Subaru, was wheeled into the Pukekohe Indian Association Hall, it was welcomed by a haka by the Pukekohe High School and the Midnight Oil version of the pop song King of the Mountain.
Bourne's coffin was also decorated with his No 1 rally number and the words "Poss", after the nickname he earned when as a youngster he crashed his mother's car trying to avoid a possum on a country road.
It was a moving moment later in the service when Taylor gave a tribute to his father, asking why God took so many good people.
The hall was packed with close to 1200 people, with a similar number outside, watching on a large screen.
Bourne was due to be taken for a private interment after the service.
