Marmite or Vegemite?
It's a debate most Kiwis have joined at some point, and is a question posed by Martinborough's Matt Guild in a new Kiwiana-inspired exhibition.
Showing at Heritage Books and Art Gallery in Masterton, Guild's latest five works depict five staples normally found at any average New Zealand dairy _ Vegemite, Marmite, Watties baked beans, Jaffas and the classic Longest Drink In Town milkshake container.
His brand of photo-realism has also captured other Kiwi icons such as Weetbix, Tip Top ice cream, spaghetti and _ in a nod to pop art legend Andy Warhol and US photo-realist Ralph Goings _ a can of Watties tomato sauce. ''It's taking something mundane you might pass by in the supermarket and using it to say something. It's also capturing those special moments, like hopping in the old car with grandad and going to the dairy to get a milkshake.''
The exhibition is on until the end of June. All works are for sale.
