It's that time again – GST return is due, you're up to your neck in other things and it's the last thing you feel like tackling. Ever thought of:

you have the DLN number (at the top of your paper copy GST return), and then you're set to go.
• Paying via electronic banking – saves writing out a cheque and no need to send anything to the IRD if you file online as well!
• Filing on Monday – if your GST return is due on a weekend, public holiday or your regional anniversary, you have until the next working day to file and pay.
• Enjoying Christmas – if you're due to file a return on 28th December, you receive an automatic extension to 15th January, so relax! The same applies when your return is due on 28th April – you receive an automatic extension to 7th May.
• Receiving fast refunds – fill out a Direct credit authorisation form (IR587) and send to the IRD, any refunds will be sent automatically to your bank account
• Making corrections – if you find a minor mathematical or oversight error in a prior GST return, and the value is less than $200 GST per return, you may make an adjustment in your next GST return
• Getting a Tax Due Date schedule – go onto the IRD's website, click on Get it done online and complete the Tax Due Date Calculator. It helps to plan for and manage the paperwork and payment of taxes.
• Keeping current – Do you know how to treat zero-rated supplies? Know the GST implications on any new activities you undertake
• Changing your filing period – finding your GST period too short? Find out if you can change from a one-month period to a two or six-month period. You will need to apply to the IRD as certain restrictions do apply.
• Cancelling your registration – if your annual taxable supplies are below $60,000, you may cancel GST registration. There are certain conditions that apply as well as final GST reporting requirements.
