Michael Standen was expecting visitors to meet his one-week-old baby for the first time, but he didn't expect a car to come crashing through the wall of his daughter's room.
The vehicle ended up just metres away from where his baby was sleeping, in Burswood Drive, East Tamaki.
"We were having a couple of friends around and then we heard a big crash, and we ran outside and saw a car halfway through the wall. It was a bit of a shock."
Mr Standen said the motorist was too startled to speak.
"The driver was kind of stunned. He wasn't really saying much when he got out of the car."
Mr Standen, his partner and two children had been living in the house for only two weeks.
"It's quite a quiet street, we don't usually have many cars speeding or anything around here," he said.
Mr Standen said he was a bit shaken by the ordeal but was glad nobody was hurt.
"The newborn got woken up, but then she had a feed and just slept it off, she was all good."
He had yet to break the news to his 6-year-old daughter that her room had undergone some unexpected restructuring, as she was out of the house when the crash happened.
"I suppose she'll find out pretty quickly once she comes home."
