Sex on Victoria syllabus

Students will be able to take Sex 111 at Victoria University next year.

Course coordinator Pat Moloney, a political scientist, said students taking the first-year paper would enjoy lectures dealing with topics as diverse as Sex in Ancient Rome, Commercial Sex in New Zealand, and Queer Theory.

But Sexuality and Society, which was originally to be called Sex 111 and is now tagged FHSS 111, was not appealing to the prurient interest of students.

Economics senior lecturer Martin Lally said it was clever marketing to call it Sexuality and Society as it would draw more students, keeping staff numbers up in departments teaching it.
