Transit New Zealand and Roadsafe Auckland say a motorway safety campaign has successfully alerted drivers to the need to keep road workers safe.
The two-month campaign, with the slogan 'Slow Down At Roadworks', had a positive impact on drivers who now appeared to be more often following restrictions placed at roadworks sites, the orgnsiations said.
The billboard, brochure and radio advertising campaign was used to emphasise the importance of obeying temporary signs at roadworks sites and taking care to watch for workers.
RoadSafe Auckland's regional road safety co-ordinator, Martin Dawe, said the campaign successfully reached key audiences including new drivers, tourists and professional drivers.
Transit regional manager Wayne McDonald said drivers were often frustrated by speed restrictions in areas where there appeared to be no work taking place.
"Speed restriction signs protect the road as well as motorists - they are always there for a reason," he said.
