A lengthy rescue operation is continuing in Auckland to reach a self employed contractor who has fallen down a collapsed drain.
It is not yet confirmed whether the man is dead or alive after a drain he was working in collapsed and he was covered in clay.
Police say the accident occurred at 11.50am at Atkin Ave, Mission Bay.
About 20 fire fighters were on scene to assist with the rescue of the victim, who still had not been retrieved from the hole at 4pm, according to the Fire Communications centre.
Fire fighters have called in a crane to lower someone down the hole, which was believed to be about 5m deep and was at the front of a residential address.
Occupational Safety and Health are investigating.
