The Ngati Wai iwi has placed a seven-day rahui (prohibition) on an area of Whangarei Harbour where the body of a kayaker washed ashore on Sunday.
Whangarei man William Keith Pearson's body was found about 12.30pm at Reotahi, about 7km northwest of where his sea kayak was found moored on Saturdaynight.
Mr Pearson, 43, an experienced fisherman, had been well-prepared and was wearing a lifejacket.
The Ngati Wai Trust Board placed the rahui over an area from Reotahi down to Marsden Pt, prohibiting fishing, swimming and the gathering of seafood for a week.
