The road toll for this Queen's Birthday holiday weekend remained at three this morning.
Pedestrian Walter John Van der Lee, 36, of Waipara, North Canterbury, died after being struck by a 4WD vehicle on Friday night, police said.
The incident happened around 9.20pm on State Highway 1, just south of Waipara.
Before the incident, several calls had been received from people concerned about a man wandering on the road.
In Auckland, around 7.40pm on Friday, a 69-year-old man died after the car in which he was a passenger collided with a motorcycle in the eastern suburb of Pakuranga, police said. His name has not yet been released.
About midday on Saturday a man was killed in the southern Auckland suburb of Weymouth.
Jeremiah Peters, 19, of Manurewa, died after he was thrown from the van he was driving when it slid and rolled after getting into loose gravel, police said.
The Queen's Birthday weekend road toll last year was two.
