A MASTERTON woman, who was seven months pregnant, was killed in a crash on the Blairlogie Langdale Road at the weekend.
Masterton police Acting Sergeant Stuart Martindale said at about 12.30pm on Saturday Amanda Marie Brasell, 20, was killed when the Subaru WRX car in which she was travelling collided with
a Toyota van on a stretch of the Masterton to Riversdale road known as Kerosene Ridge.
Mr Martindale said the Subaru had spun sideways as it headed downhill at Kerosene Ridge and hit the front of the van that was travelling up the hill.
A Featherston family of four, including a girl, 3, and boy, 11, had been in the van when it was hit and all received moderate to minor injuries in the collision.
The family was taken to Wairarapa Hospital by ambulance, although only the mother, 33, was admitted with moderate injuries.
The Wellington Police Serious Crash Unit had attended the scene of the crash and investigations are continuing.
The partner of Amanda Brasell, John Nauer, 23, is believed to have been the driver of the Subaru.
He was cut from the wreckage of the car, Masterton fire service station officer Doug Flowerday said yesterday.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew Mr Nauer to Wellington Hospital with leg and chest injuries, helicopter crewman Logan Taylor said, in a serious but not life-threatening condition. Mr Nauer was last night listed as stable.
In the backseat of the Subaru was a male passenger, 24, who was taken by ambulance to Wairarapa Hospital with minor injuries, Wairarapa Ambulance Service operations manager Shaun Camp said.
Vern Brasell said he and wife Jocelyn, along with their entire family, are distraught at the death of their daughter Amanda, who was seven months pregnant with a boy.
"We are all devastated and just trying to work through this together," he said.
Mr Brasell said Amanda had been working part-time as a hairdresser in Masterton and, like her sisters Emma and Katie, was a keen sportswoman who excelled at netball and as a swimmer.
