One person has been killed and a second has life-threatening injuries after a crash in Papatoetoe in Auckland tonight.
Emergency services were called at 9.30pm to reports that two people were trapped in their badly damaged vehicle after it ploughed into a fence.
The crash happened on Puhinui Rd, betweenWyllie Rd and Vision Place.
Fire and ambulance attended the incident first, with the fire service extricating both people from the car. Northern fire shift manager Scott Osmond said the first person had already died when emergency services arrived at the scene.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a person had died and a second person was being taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition.
Several people had reported the crash, a police spokeswoman said, with several reporting the vehicle was badly damaged. Police arrived at the scene just after 9.45pm.
Police have asked motorists to avoid Puhinui Rd between Vision Place and Wyllie Rd, as well as avoiding the Puhinui Rd motorway entry and exit.
The Serious Crash Unit will be investigating the cause of the crash.
