Passengers in the car which veered off State Highway 2and ended up in a dam early on Sunday morning had a lucky escape.
The car was travelling along the state highway near Te Aute before coming off the road, going through a fence and falling in to a dam ina paddock at the bottom of Te Aute Hill.
While one man remained in a serious but stable condition in the high dependency unit and one woman remained in a stable condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital, two other passengers were discharged with minor injuries.
Otane Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer John Oliver said it could have been a lot worse than what it was.
By the time the crew arrived at the scene the four passengers were already out of the car and in the ambulance.
A St Johns spokesmansaid the ambulance was called by a member of public just after midnight and all four passengers were immediately transported to Hawke's Bay Hospital with two in a serious condition and two with minor injuries.
It is understood they were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled down the bank into the dam.
Mr Oliver said based on the skidmarks it looked like the car lost control and went along the grass beside the road for a while before going through the fence and into the dam.
