Times-Age newspaper seller Terry Down is questioning pedestrian safety in Masterton after being knocked out in a fall on pavers in Queen St.
Mr Down said he was selling newspapers on Saturday during his daily round of the Masterton central business district and tripped on pavers outside a small cafe, south
of Jackson St.
He was knocked unconscious in the fall and woke in hospital with a headache and concussion, as well as cuts and scrapes on his hands.
He has been warned not to drive for a month.
Mr Down says he has twice before slipped, though not fallen, in other areas of Queen St with the pavers, which at intervals form a part of courtesy crossings.
Stephen Williams, Masterton District Council urban roading engineer, said that a week ago a woman had called to say she tripped on pavers near the intersection of Dixon St and Bannister St.
It was the only other recent report of a fall on the pavers, he said, which were monitored and relevelled and repaired when necessary.
Mr Williams said the paving from the threshold of the footpath and across the road was relaid midway through last year and the portion of paving where the woman said she tripped had been repaired six months ago.
