The Overlander rail service between Auckland and Wellington is being cut back to three days a week during winter.
It will only run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from May 1 to November 29 this year. In the peak season it runs seven days a week.
KiwiRail public affairs manager Kevin Ramshaw said passenger numbers had held up well but were not high enough to continue operating a daily service.
