The whiskers took almost a year to grow and the axe took four hours to sharpen. But axing the moustache for charity on Sunday should take only seconds.
Greg Smith, an axe-grinder with Tuatahi Racing Axes and Saws in Masterton, has been growing a fine handlebar moustache since last "Movember" and decided to have his whiskered top lip streamlined in the wake of a smoko-room challenge at his Solway workplace.
The salt-and-pepper moustache will fall victim to the hatchet at the Made in Masterton Expo on Sunday using a Tuatahi racing axe, which was designed and manufactured in the town.
"My partner is all for it and because our axes are advertised as being sharp enough to shave with, and they are, I thought why not. And it's all for a good cause."
Fellow Tuatahi worker and axe-maker Grant Fawcett will wield the axe on Sunday and although he "won't be close shaving because it's sharp enough to take the hair and his lip as well", he is confident the shave will be quick, clean and bloodless.
Up for auction will be the chance for the highest bidder to close-shave Mr Smith although that will be executed with a safety razor for the sake of safety, Mr Fawcett said.
Any funds raised during the auction will be donated toward prostate cancer research, Mr Fawcett said..
