A 32-year-old man has died after his vehicle and a truck and trailer unit collided near Tokoroa early today.
The crash happened on State Highway 1, 10km south of Tokoroa, about 3.20am, Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said.
The truck received moderate damage and the man's Ford vehicle sustained extensive damage.
The driver of the truck was uninjured, Mr Troy said.
State Highway One was closed for two hours until one lane was reopened.
Road and weather conditions at the time were good, and speed and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash, Mr Troy said.
"From an initial investigation the Ford vehicle has crossed to the incorrect side of the road into gravel before colliding with the truck.
"Police cannot emphasise enough the importance of not driving when tired and fatigued. Ensure you have enough sleep prior to your journey and if you feel tired stop and rest," he said.
The Taupo Serious Crash Unit was investigating the cause of the crash.
The Tokoroa man's name would be released once his family members had been advised.
