LONDON - The remains of a New Zealand Second World War airman, Arthur Round, could be recovered in Iceland today.
Flying Officer Round is one of four airmen who died when their Fairey Battle aircraft crashed into a glacier-covered mountain in Iceland on May 26, 1941.
Icelandic historian Hordur Geirsson has spent
years searching the mountains southwest of the northern Icelandic town of Akureyri for the remains of RAF pilots based near Reykjavik during the Second World War.
Royal Air Force spokesman Squadron Leader Andy Pemberton said the remains of Flying Officer Round would be recovered from the crash site in the next day or so.
The RAF decided to mount the expedition to recover the remains and to survey the site for a full excavation. Large parts of the plane, including the cockpit, are still under the ice.
