Tauranga police are continuing to make enquiries following reports of a gunman on the loose near Te Puke.

Police cordoned off a stretch of Manoeka Rd from Te Puke Highway as members of the Armed Offenders Squad helped assist officers deal with the situation last night.

A police spokeswoman earlier said they received initial reports of a man with a gun from about 2.30pm and members of the AOS were called in to assist as a precaution.

At 5.45pm last night Manoeka Rd was still blocked off, with police cordons in the area.

A police communications spokeswoman today said that police were continuing to make enquiries in the general area.
