A social media posting has raised a false gun scare at a North Shore school.
On Tuesday night a Rosmini College student wrote online that he was going to bring a gun to school.
Principal Nixon Cooper said police were alerted and the investigation had revealed that the student did not have a gun and that there was not a gun in his house.
A student made a "silly and inappropriate posting" on social media", Cooper said.
The student thought it was a joke - "obviously it's not a joke".
He had been at school for a disciplinary meeting but had otherwise not been attending school since the incident, Cooper said.
Staff had spoken to his peers but there would be considerable ongoing discussions with the students about what happened, he said.
The "vast majority" of parents had been very sensible in response to the news.
"We informed the Ministry and they were very happy with how it had been handled."
