A police spokeswoman said power lines were down across the road and no one could get to the driver until power authorities cut the electricity.

She advised motorists to avoid the area this morning.

Diversions were in place along Esk St and Alverstoke Rd.

Firefighters and ambulance staff were also at the scene.

Houses in the area were not expected to be significantly affected by the power outage.
