A man caught driving 70km/h over the speed limit told police he was doing it to stop his car making a strange noise.
A patrol car snapped a 28-year-old driver speeding north at 170km/h on the Waikato Expressway at Horotiu about 1.15pm today, Stuff reported.
He was doing 166km/h just minutes later when he passed road policing Sergeant Neil Mansill. A third patrol car pulled the Toyota Celica up in Huntly.
The man told police officers his car made a noise but stopped making it at speeds of over 140km/h.
Mansill told Stuff it was not an excuse they had heard before.
