The driver killed in a car crash in Wellsford on Sunday afternoon has been named as 39-year-old Shannen Dean Ford.
Ford, from Wellsford, was the driver of the vehicle and died at the scene after he fled police following a failed breath test.
Police said in a statement, "Following a positive test for alcohol, the driver of the vehicle fled from police in his vehicle.
"He crashed his car a short time later and died at the scene."
The crash happened shortly after 4pm on Whangaripo Valley Rd and involved one car.
A second man was seriously injured in the accident. He was trapped in the car wreckage and was freed by fire crew before being airlifted to Auckland Hospital.
Police extend their sympathies to Mr Ford's family.
The Serious Crash Unit is continuing to investigate.
