The driver killed in a two car crash south of Christchurch yesterday was driving on the wrong side of the road, police say.

Jin Zhang, a 26-year-old Chinese national, died in the accident on the Christchurch-Akaroa Rd, near Tai Tapu, at 2.30pm yesterday.

Sergeant Grant Stewart was reported by Fairfax as saying Zhang had crossed the centre line and hit another vehicle.

She died at the scene.

"Police extend their sympathies to Ms Zhang's family and friends," a police statement said today.

"The serious crash unit investigation is ongoing and police cannot comment further."

State Highway 75 was closed south of Tai Tapu between Macartneys Rd and Duck Pond Rd yesterday but has since reopened.
