An elderly man suffered head injuries when an armed bandit broke into his home, demanded money and assaulted him.
The incident happened in the Horowhenua town of Shannon just after 12am today.
Police rushed to a Stout St property when the assaulted 84-year-old called a neighbour for help.
"A male offender has entered the address and demanded money from the elderly victim," Detective Sergeant Johnny Oram said.
"The offender has then assaulted the victim with a weapon and left. The victim is recovering in hospital with injuries sustained to his head."
Officers are examining the crime scene this morning and speaking to neighbours.
Mr Oram said police were keen to here from people in the area last night.
