A 19-year-old man has appeared in Christchurch District Court today facing charges connected to the stabbing of a taxi driver in the city on Tuesday night.
Christchurch police said they were still seeking witnesses and evidence.
The driver picked up a man outside the Christchurch Central city bus exchange on Colombo Street opposite Ballantynes at about 9.15pm.
He drove him to Tancred Street near Linwood Avenue in Linwood, about 10 minutes away, where he was asked to pull over.
The passenger demanded money and, when the driver refused, stabbed him several times in the chest and neck with a sharp object before leaving the scene.
The passenger then ran east on Tancred Street and turned right into Linwood Avenue, where he was found and arrested by police.
The taxi driver suffered lacerations to his chest and was taken to Christchurch Public Hospital.
Police appealed to witnesses in the Tancred Street and Linwood Avenue area to come forward, and for residents to check their gardens for a sharp object and a small shoulder bag.
