Waikato University has appointed an Irishman as its fourth vice-chancellor.
Roy Crawford, 55, is currently senior pro vice-chancellor and a professor of mechanical engineering at Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he has special responsibility for research and development.
Professor Crawford was a professor at Auckland University's mechanical engineering school from1999-2001.
"Ever since we left (New Zealand), my wife and I have been looking for an opportunity to come back," he said.
The couple still own a home in Auckland and were considering retirement there when the vice-chancellor's vacancy came up at Waikato following Bryan Gould's announcement he would retire.
Prof Crawford's five-year contract will begin on January 1 after Prof Gould's retirement.
