New alga found in Waikato River

Levels of the blue/green algae plaguing the Waikato River are decreasing, but a second potentially toxic alga has been discovered in the water.

Tests taken this week revealed the presence of an alga called microcystis, but scientists are not sure if it is toxic or how much is in the river.

More tests are being done to try to establish if it is harmful to humans.
