The victim was found dead inside her Mt Wellington home on Monday night and police said they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the case, dubbed Operation Burgundy.
Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said police were called out after reports of a domestic dispute on Rielly Place.
When they arrived, they discovered the body of the woman and the defendant who had suffered injuries to his arms.
He underwent surgery at Middlemore Hospital during the week and in court today stood in the dock with white bandages covering his forearms.
Police said investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding Ms Wati's death were ongoing and they urged anyone with further information to come forward.
